It’s Reached Our Shores Now

Even the government is admitting that the U.S. economy is slowing down.  On Thursday, we learned that U.S. GDP grew at just a 0.5 percent annual rate during the first quarter of 2016.  This was lower than analysts were anticipating, and it marks the third time in a row that the GDP number has declined compared to the previous quarter.  In other words, GDP growth has been declining for close to a year now, and this lines up perfectly with what I have been saying about how the second half of last year was a turning point that plunged us into the early chapters of a brand new economic crisis.  And as you will see below, the official GDP number is highly manipulated, and the way that it is calculated has been changed numerous times over the years.  So the bad number that is being reported by the government is actually the best case scenario.

Of course many of the “experts” being quoted by the mainstream media are saying that this is just a temporary blip and that good times for the U.S. economy are right around the corner.  For instance, check out this quote from Reuters

“The economy essentially stalled in the first quarter, but that doesn’t mean it is faltering,” said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania. “Some of the restraints to growth are dissipating. Growth is likely to accelerate going forward.”

We have been told this same story for years, but the “acceleration” has never materialized.  In fact, Barack Obama is poised to become the only president in U.S. history to never have a single year when the economy grew by more than 3 percent during his presidency.

That is a statistic that is hard to believe, but it is true.

In addition, Louis Woodhill has pointed out that the average rate of U.S. economic growth during the Obama years will be the fourth worst in recorded history…

Assuming 2.67% RGDP growth for 2016, Obama will leave office having produced an average of 1.55% growth. This would place his presidency fourth from the bottom of the list of 39*, above only those of Herbert Hoover (-5.65%), Andrew Johnson (-0.70%) and Theodore Roosevelt (1.41%)

So does anyone out there still believe that there has been an “Obama recovery”?

We also need to add another layer to our analysis.  By now, everyone should realize that the official GDP number is highly manipulated, and the way that GDP is calculated has been changed many, many times over the years.

For example, here is Peter Schiff commenting on changes that were made in 2013

The latest example of this was revealed earlier this week when the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) announced new methods of calculating Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that will immediately make the economy “bigger’ than it used to be. The changes focus heavily on how money spent on research and development (R&D) and the production of “intangible” assets like movies, music, and television programs will be accounted for. Declaring such expenditures to be “investments” will immediately increase U.S. GDP by about three percent. Such an upgrade would immediately increase the theoretic size of the U.S economy and may well lead to the perception of faster growth. In reality these smoke and mirror alterations are no different from changes made to the inflation and unemployment yardsticks that for years have convinced Americans that the economy is better than it actually is.

And the following originally comes from a Bloomberg article which discussed changes that were made in 2015

The way some parts of U.S. gross domestic product are calculated are about to change in the wake of the debate over persistently depressed first-quarter growth.

In a blog post published Friday, the Bureau of Economic Analysis listed a series of alterations it will make in seasonally adjusting data used to calculate economic growth. The changes will be implemented with the release of the initial second-quarter GDP estimate on July 30, the BEA said.

One of the changes that was made last year was intended to artificially boost GDP growth numbers for the first quarter of each year.

So without that artificial boost, what would the real number for the first quarter of 2016 look like?

John Williams of shadowstats.com tracks what the official government numbers would be if honest numbers were actually being used, and according to him U.S. GDP growth has been continuously negative since 2005.

But we certainly can’t have the press report those sorts of things.  If that were the case, then everyone would be talking about the “economic depression” that never seems to end.

Unfortunately, the truth is that we are in the midst of a long-term economic decline, and we can see evidence of this all around us.  For example, on Thursday we also learned that the rate of homeownership in the United States has fallen once again, and it is now hovering just 0.1 percent above the lowest level ever recorded in American history…

After gains in the second half of 2015, the homeownership rate fell to just 63.6 percent, seasonally adjusted, in the first quarter of this year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Homeownership hit a high of 69.4 percent in 2004, during one of the biggest housing booms in history. That was also when mortgage lending was arguably at its loosest level in history. The homeownership rate is now just one-tenth of 1 basis point higher than its all-time low in the second quarter of 2015.

For many more numbers that show that the U.S. economy has continued to decline, please see the following articles that I authored earlier this month…

Now that U.S. GDP growth has been steadily dropping for three quarters in a row, hopefully people will wake up and begin to realize what is happening.

We are entering very hard times, so now is not the time to go out and buy fancy new toys or to go into lots of debt.

Rather, this is a time to tighten our belts, batten down the hatches and prepare for rough seas ahead.

Sadly, most people continue to have blind faith that our politicians and the central bankers will be able to perform some kind of miracle to save us from what is coming.

You are a tried and true capitalist. For some reason you are attempting to deny this dose of reality, which makes poking fun at you just a bit more fun. Face it, every insult that you have tossed around these forums at everyone else could have been self-directed given your capitalist leanings.

  • JohnDille

I WOULD PREFER THAT YOU CALL ME A BLOOD SUCKING INTESTINAL PARASITE!!! CALLING ME A CAPITALIST IS TRULY AN INSULT!!!

So you are a capitalist! Well done.

YEAH,,,, I ONLY MADE ABOUT $500 TODAY, WHILE I RECYCLED SOME ALUMINUM, AND WATERED MY GARDEN AND PUNCHED A FEW THOUSAND NUMBERS INTO A HUGE DATABASE I AM WORKING ON!!! SURE WISH I COULD DO THAT ON A DAILY BASIS… BUT… TIMING IS EVERYTHING, AND USUALLY MY TIMING IS TERRIBLE!!!
How did the U.S. economy perform under President Barack Obama? Better than it could have, but still poorly enough to leave a lot of people unhappy.

Obama’s economic track record has come under renewed scrutiny as the race to replace him heats up. Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has called the economy “already reasonably crippled.” Obama, in a recent New York Times interview, argued that his administration’s achievements are greater than Americans recognize.

So who’s right? For starters, it’s important not to exaggerate the influence any president has over the economy: Obama came into office during a severe crisis, and has had to deal with a radically obstructionist Congress. Even with that caveat, the answer depends on how you look at it.

Compared with other major advanced nations, the U.S. has recovered pretty well from the recession of 2008 and 2009. Obama’s administration moved much faster than its counterparts in the euro area, for example, to recapitalize banks and to provide fiscal stimulus — actions that economists believe made a significant difference. As of 2015, U.S. gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, was up 10 percent from 2007 — more than in Japan, Germany, France or the U.K. Here’s how that looks:

The best part of this cute little give and take? While you sit in a pool of self-induced tears, whining about your miserable lot, I have been using capitalism to make money! If you had spent your life expending as much energy striving to achieve as you do striving to complain, you might have stood a chance.

YEAH… REAL WORLD NUMBERS ARE TOTALLY ALIEN TO YOU!!! YOU PREFER THE FANTASY WORLD NUMBERS THAT YOUR RICH REPUBLICAN MASTERS FEED TO YOU AND YOUR FELLOW PUPPETS!!!
    John —

My name is Jaffet Alamilla. I work as an overnight stocker at a Walmart in Riverside, California. I just signed “OUR Walmart’s call for change” because I love my job at Walmart but I still struggle to provide for my family on Walmart pay.

After years of calling on Walmart to raise pay, I was so excited when I heard Walmart would be giving a raise to all of its store associates earlier this year. But that excitement went away quickly when I realized they were only raising base pay to $10 an hour and long term associates were going to be getting an even smaller raise. Ten dollars an hour is better than what most associates were getting but it’s still not enough to put food on the table for my family.

As a father of two, nothing in the world is more important to me than my kids. In fact, I work overnights just so I can try and spend more time with them during the day. But if it weren’t for the breakfasts and lunches that their schools provide, I honestly don’t know how my children would get three meals a day. My children are why I’m standing up.

In the past when associates from thousands of stores signed on to our petition for $15 and full-time Walmart raised wages to $9 last year and $10 this year. Let’s keep pushing until we get a wage high enough to actually live on. Sign onto our call for change.

I love my job at Walmart. I love my coworkers. But I also know Walmart can do better. That’s why I’m calling on them to change. Will you join me?

    Thanks for letting me share.

THANK YOU… I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A FANTASTIC AMERICAN!!!!

  • JohnDille

IF YOU WERE NOT SUCH AN ARROGANT IGNORANT SELF CENTERED REPUBLICAN, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THAT NUMBR IS ACTUALLY CONSERVATIVE…. BECAUSE IT DEFINES POVERTY IN TERMS OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE POOR IN MOST OTHER NATIONS IN THE WORLD. IF THEY USED THE AMERICAN STANDARD OF POVERTY, ALMOST 7 BILLION OF THE 7.3 BILLION PEOPLE ON EARTH WOULD BE IN POVERTY… AND MORE THAN 5 BILLION OF THOSE WOULD BE CONSIDERED LIVING IN EXTREME POVERTY… WHICH IS DEFINED TO BE AN INCOME THAT IS LESS THAN HALF THE OFFICIAL POVERTY LEVEL FOR ANY GIVEN HOUSEHOLD!!! LOOK IT UP…. IF YOU CAN GET YOUR FACE OUT OF YOUR MIRROR LON G ENOUGH TO DO SO!!! CAPITALISM WORKS VERY VERY WELL…. BUT ONLY FOR THE RICH AND THEIR UPPER CLASS PALS AND PUPPETS… FOLKS LIKE YOU!!! EVERYONE ELSE WORKS FOR NOTHING, OR FOR EVEN LESS THAN NOTHINGO GENERATE THE INCOME AND WEALTH THAT ACCRUES ONLY TO THE PEOPLE AT THE VERY TOP OF THE SYSTEM!!!OU WOULD KNOW IF YOU DIDNT SPEND ALL YOUR TIME ADMIRING YOURSELF IN YOUR MANY MIRRORS!!!

  • Joe Cabot

So, out of the 7 billion people on the planet, 6 billion, or 85% live in poverty? Methinks that you are making it up as you go again. Was this statistic in your mythical published economic papers? Maybe your liberties with facts, truth, and reality are the reason that they never saw the light of day.

  • JohnDille

THEN TUNE IN TO THE REAL WORLD WHERE 6 BILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN POVERTY… AT LEAST HALF OF THEM IN EXTREME POVERTY… AND WHERE DICTATOS… WORKING HAND IN GLOVE WITH MANY OF THE LARGEST CRPORATIONS AND RICHEST PEOPLE ON THE PLANET… ROUTINELY TORTURE AND MURDER AND EXTORT HUGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE, IN ORDER TO MAKE MONEY FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR CAPITALIST ALLIES!!! ALL OF THAT MISERY AND PAIN AND REAL HATE SHOULD INSPIRE YOU FAR MORE THAN MY PUNY COMPLAINING DOES!!! THAT IS… IF YOU CAN LOOK AWAY FROM YOUR MIRROR LONG ENOUGH TO EVEN REALIZE THAT ALL THAT MISERY AND POVERTY AND EXTORTION AND OPPRESSION ACTUALLY EXISTS… A LOT OF IT RIGHT DOWN THE STREET… IN ANY DIRECTION… FROM WHERE YOU LIVE!!!

Hey, if finding success via capitalism means being called a puppet or an apologist by some anonymous, envious, bitter internet rabble, I am all in! Each of your whiny, venomous diatribes makes me appreciated capitalism a bit more! Thanks for the inspiration.

Money might be hard to come by in many parts of America, but it’s cheap in the 2016 election. Wealthy Republican donors have given nearly $400 million so far to presidential candidates with zilch to show for their efforts, including at least $63 million donated to super PACs supporting the latest GOP dropout – Sen. Ted Cruz.

At this point, it’s no longer surprising that Trump is trouncing opponents. What is surprising, however, is the vast sum Trump foes have wasted trying to steer the nomination toward anybody other than Trump. Yahoo Finance has been tallying the millions spent in futility on this year’s presidential campaign, and the total spent on super PACs supporting losing Republican candidates now totals roughly $375 million. That’s more than Mitt Romney’s entire estimated net worth. It’s equivalent to two years’ worth of profits for Netflix.

Cruz enjoyed the support of a small number of rich donors willing to commit large amounts of money to his cause. New York hedge-fund manger Robert Mercer of Renaissance Technologies donated at least $13 million to a Cruz super PAC, allowed to accept unlimited donations, called Keep the Promise I. Toby Neugebauer, a Texas energy investor and son of a member of Congress, gave another $10 million to a second super PAC called Keep the Promise II.

The third Cruz super PAC, Keep the Promise III, collected $15 million from two Texas brothers, Dan and Farris Wilks, who became billionaires after they sold a fracking operation in 2011. Including the contributions of smaller donors, those three promise-keeping super PACs raised more than $41 million for Cruz.

A fourth Cruz super PAC, Stand for Truth, raised another $11 million. That super PAC had no eight-figure donors, but federal records show that Adam Roos, CEO of Goldcrest Investments in Dallas, gave $1 million, as did Gale Alger of Palm Beach, Fla., and a Houston company called Trinity Equity Partners. . Smaller contrubitions from other donors pushed total funding for Cruz super PACs to $63 million.

Cruz also raised at least $78.5 million for his traditional campaign, with the maximum donation being $5,400. That fundraising total is the third highest of any candidate so far, behind Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Since there’s a relatively low limit on the maximum amount any individual can donate to a traditional campaign – which must pay for campaign staff, travel costs, event rentals and direct campaigning expenses – there’s still a need for small donations from ordinary voters.

But a single rich donor giving millions to a super PAC can counteract tens of thousands of small-dollar donations to a competing candidate, which is why super PACs have become so important. Still, the lesson of 2016 is that they’re hardly decisive. Donald Trump is poised to win the Republican nomination with virtually no super PAC support. He has mastered the dark art of getting free media coverage, worth hundreds of millions in itself, and finding other ways to connect with voters that don’t require millions in spending.

Democrat Hillary Clinton does enjoy super PAC support, totaling about $76 million in fundraising so far. But that’s pretty much the entire super PAC haul on the Democratic side. Bernie Sanders doesn’t accept super PAC support, and three other Democratic candidates raised a paltry amount through super PACs.

The tally for now shows Republican donors have burned through about $375 million in super PAC donations meant to support failed candidates, compared with about $15 million in super PAC donations for all Democratic candidates. If you’ve got money to burn, maybe that lopsided ratio is no big deal. But anybody comfortable burning money tends not to have money for all that long.

WHERE WOULD HOMELESS PEOPLE GET THE ASSETS AND SUPPORT AND CONTACTS NEEDED TO START ANY BUSINESS???? HAVING BEEN HOMELESS MYSELF… FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS… ACTUALLY AND TECHNICALLY… I CAN SAY… FLAT OUT… HOMELESS PEOPLE HAVE A HARD TIME JUST SURVIVING! PRETTY MUCH THE ONLY THING THE SYSTEM DOES FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE… IS TO CRAP ON THEM AND HARASS THEM AND DO WHATEVER IT CAN TO MAKE THEM MISERABLE… MOST ESPECIALLY YOUNGER RIGHT WING A HOLES!!! I HAVE SEEN THE UNITED STATES FROM THE VERY BOTTOM, LOOKING UP…. AND MOSTLY THE VIEW IS LIKE WHAT A FISH WOULD SEE LOOKING UP FROM A TOILET AT THE FAT REAR END OF SOME JACK WIPE RIGHT WING REPUBLICAN ABOUT TO TAKE A BIG DUMP!!!

  • Joe Cabot

Maybe you never leave your den of misery, but out in the big bad world there are businesses everywhere and I don’t believe that they are being run by the homeless.

  • JohnDille

SO… BRAINS ARE NOT REQUIRED… JUST GUTS! WELL… YOU AND THE DUMBEST BUT BRAVEST CANNON FODDER ON THE PLANET SHOULD BE DOING VERY WELL, THEN… WITH BUSINESSES OF THEIR OWN. BUT THOSE BRAVE FOLKS USUALLY END UP HOMELESS, OR DOING CRAP WORK FOR CAPITALISTS AND OTHER CRIMINALS… OR… IF THEY LIVE IN THE MIDDLE EAST… THEY BLOW THEMSELVES UP IN THE NAME OF SOME FALSE PROPHET. SO MUCH FOR BRAINLESS BUT GUTSY BUSINESS STARTERS! WE CAN WONDER WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO BLOW YOURSELF UP… IN THE NAME OF CAPITALISM!!! PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT ANYWHERE NEAR WHERE I HAPPEN TO BE AT!!! BLOODY GUTS AND OTHER BODY PARTS ARE GROSS… EXCEPT TO FLIES, OF COURSE!!!

  • Joe Cabot

Anybody with guts and intestinal fortitude can start a business. The rest sit on the sidelines and complain about those with guts and intestinal fortitude.

  • JohnDille

SO… YOU ARE TELLING ME THAT ONLY PEOPLE WHO LIVE ON A FANTASY ISLAND PARADISE… PEOPLE WHO CAN AFFORD TO IGNORE REALITY… ARE CAPABLE OF STARTING BUSINESSES??? I KIND OF THOUGHT SO!!! AS FOR THE STATISTICS… NO… THEY ARE TOTALLY ACCURATE… AND CAN BE FOUND IN A NUMBER OF PLACES… BUT MOSTLY AT GOVERNMENT SPONSORED SITES LIKE THE IRS DOT ORG. OF COURSE… THOSE ARE REAL WORLD NUMBERS, AND ARE VERY DIFFERENT THAN THE FANTASY DATA THAT YOU SO CLEARLY PREFER TO HIDE BEHIND. YOU HAVE NO USE FOR ANYTHING THAT IS NOT BASED ON REPUBLICAN FANTASIES AND RIGHT WING STEER MANURE!!!

  • Joe Cabot

You could not start a business tomorrow. You are far too fearful. Oh, and it seems as if you are making up statistics again.

  • JohnDille

I COULD START A PRETTY GOOD SIZE BUSINESS TOMORROW…. IF I WAS STUPID ENOUGH TO RISK WHAT LITTLE CAPITAL I HAVE ON DOING SO… KNOWING THAT A NEAR MAJORITY OF ALL BUSINESSES ARE NET MONEY LOSERS… AND THAT A SOLID MAJORITY OF ALL BUSINESSES FAIL WITHING FIVE YEARS….. AND THAT 90% OF ALL BUSINESSES EARN LESS IN ANNUAL NET PROFITS THAN SOME KID WORKING AT MCDONALDS PART TIME!!! UNLESS YOU ARE WEALTHY, OR INHERIT A PRETTY GOOD BUSINESS, STARTING A BUSINESS IS MOSTLY JUST AN EGO TRIP, A TAX WRITE OFF TO HELP REDUCE TAXES ON SOME MUCH MORE PROFITABLE LINE OF BUSINESS… OR JUST SOME GUY WHO IS TOO LAZY TO GET AND KEEP A REAL JOB TRYING TO PRETEND LIKE HE HAS SOME AMBITION AND ABILITY!!! DEEP IN YOUR HEART… YOU KNOW WHICH ONE OF THOSE IS YOU! I WOULD BET THAT YOU WERE SIMPLY TOO LAZY TO WORK A REAL JOB… SO YOU GOT YOUR RICH RELATIVES TO HELP YOU FUND YOUR HOBBY, WHICH YOU CALL A BUSINESS, AND WHICH SOME WEALTHY RELATIVE USES AS A TAX WRITE OFF BECAUSE YOU CAN’T MAKE ENOUGH TO PAY HIM WHAT YOU OWE HIM!!! BUT… I HAVE BEEN WRONG BEFORE, SO THE ODDS OF ALL THAT BEING TRUE IS NOT MUCH BETTER THAN 50/50!!!

  • Joe Cabot

The very idea that you have no idea about starting a business is great insight as to why you have been a financial failure. There are numerous reasons that I love capitalism but the fact that it makes you so angry is my favorite by quite a margin.

  • JohnDille

IF THEY ARE WORKING PEOPLE… ESPECIALLY EMPLOYEES OF SOME GREEDY SELF CENTERED REPUBLICAN LIKE YOU… WHERE THE HADES ARE THEY GOING TO GET THE CAPITAL TO START ANY BUSINESS LARGER THAN A LEMONADE STAND????? YOU REPUBLICANS DO NOT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR POLICIES HAVE EFFECTIVELY STOLEN MORE THAN 25 TRILLION DOLLARS IN POTENTIAL INCOME FROM THE BOTTOM 90% OF ALL THE PEOPLE IN THIS NATION… NEARLY ALL OF THAT JUST SINCE RONALD REAGAN TOOK FIRST OFFICE… AND HAVE EFFECTIVELY TRANSFERED ALL THAT LOST INCOME TO THE TOP 5%… HALF OF IT TO THE TOP 1%!!!! AND IF YOU DOUBT THAT… LOOK UP THE RELEVANT DATA… AND DO THE FREAKING MATH… IF YOU ARE NOT TOO LAZY AND ARROGANT AND SELF CENTERED TO DISCOVER THE GRIM TRUTH!!! WHICH, OF COURSE, YOU ARE!!!

  • Joe Cabot

If these folks can only voice an opinion behind someone’s back, it really is not going to make much of an impact so it is a rather weak opinion. And if these folks don’t like where they are at, they are free to risk their capital just like I did and start their own business.

  • JohnDille

I WONDER HOW MANY OF YOUR EMPLOYEES PRAISE CAPITALISM???? BEHIND YOUR BACK, WHEN THEY CAN SAY WHAT THEY EALLY THINK WITHOUT GETTING FIRED FOR BEING HONEST!!! CAPITALISTS AND OTHER REPUBLICANS REALLY REALLY HATE HONEST WORKING PEOPLE!!!

  • Joe Cabot

Don’t need a job. I own the company. And for that I will always praise capitalism!

  • JohnDille

YOU KEEP SINGING THE PRAISES OF CAPITALISM!!! MAYBE YOU OUGHT TO GET A REAL JOB!!!

  • Joe Cabot

You keep pledging your allegiance to politicians. Seems like we may have found the root of your problems, anger, and lack of success.

  • JohnDille

BUT YOU KISS RIGHT UP TO THE TRILLIONAIRES WHO GOT THAT WAY ROBBING ALL THE REST OF US BLIND!!! RIGHT???? YOU STILL DO NOT GET IT…. GOVERNMENT IS THE PACK OF FLEAS INHABITING THE ELEPHANTS BACK… AND IT IS THE CORPORATE ELEPHANT AND ITS BILLIONAIRE OWNERS WHO CONTROL THE USA… AND THE WORLD. POLITIICANS JUST TRY TO STEER THAT ELEPHANT A LITTLE BIT FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL THE REST OF US. EXCEPT REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS ARE MUCH MORE FRIENDLY TO THE ELEPHANT THAN DEMOCRATS ARE! NO SURPRISE THERE… THEY EVEN USE THAT CORPORATE ELEPHANT AS THE SYMBOL FOR THEIR PARTY OF STUFF SHIRTS… AND WORKING CLASS BROWN NOSERS LIKE YOU!!!

  • Joe Cabot

I have absolutely no problem blaming Obomber. Or the Bush crime family. Or the Clinton crime syndicate. Or Reagan, Carter, Johnson, McConnell, Boehner, Stretch Pelosi, Reid, nor any of the umpteen other grifters that have been partaken in decades of bad decision making on our behalf.

  • JohnDille

BUT… YOU REPUBLICANS HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS AT ALL BLAMING OBAMA FOR ALL OF THE PROBLEMS OUR CONOMIC SYSTEM IS UNDERGOING…. EVEN THOUGH NEARLY ALL OF THOSE PROBLEMS CAN BE TRACED DIRECTLY BACK TO BUSH JUNIOR AND TO RONDALD REAGAN AND TO ALL THE REPUBLICANS AND SOME CONSERVATIVE DEMORATS WHO SUPPORTED REAGAN AND BUSH JUNIORS CRIMES AND TREASONS AND INCOMPETENCES!!! I AM SHOCKED… SHOCKED I SAY… AT REPUBLICAN HYPOCRISIES!!!

  • Joe Cabot

Seems like this is nothing but a filibuster so you can avoid admitting that Obomber is not pulling the economic levers for the country.

  • JohnDille

    Dear John,

Rich Uncle Pennybags – no, sorry, I meant Carlos Beruff, not the guy on the Monopoly board – just dropped another $500K on self-glorifying ads, about being a “businessguy” and such. That makes $2 million this month, so far.

Let me be clear: Carlos Beruff is trying to buy this Senate seat.

Is America a meritocracy, or a plutocracy? You tell me. If you want to see me in the Senate, instead of Thurston Howell III, then please contribute $5 to our campaign

And to make matters worse, Beruff is trying to make this Senate race just like the Republican Presidential race – a sick, slick reality TV show called “The Biggest Bigot.” Here is what he said yesterday:

Carlos Beruff: Don’t “allow anybody from the Middle East into this country.”

All Sentient Beings: “Is Carlos Beruff stupid, or evil?”

Certain presidential candidates (and certain Senate candidates) have adopted a Chicken Little attitude toward Syrian refugees. “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” I’m familiar with their so-called “arguments.” But Beruff is engaging in a whole ‘nother level of hysteria – let’s just keep everyone out, he says. Because, Beruff thinks, you can never be absolutely certain that an 84-year-old grandmother from Dubai who comes to the Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York for cancer treatment isn’t . . . a terrorist!! Or possibly even a double-negative.

Does Carlos Beruff actually believe that everyone in the Middle East is a terrorist, or is he just saying that to win votes? And which of those two things is worse? Either way, this is not a person who belongs in the U.S. Senate.

Here’s an interesting thing. Carlos Beruff’s mother took him from Cuba to the United States as a young child, in the early 60’s. At that time, Cuba was just crawling with Communists. According to the conventional wisdom, communists were sort of like terrorists, except with nuclear weapons. Suppose that the United States had prohibited “anybody from a Communist country” from ever coming to the United States? What would little Carlos be doing today – running for Mayor of Havana?

(Note to Carlos Beruff: read up on Immanuel Kant’s “Categorical Imperative.” You can’t adopt a moral code that wishes you out of existence.)

Let me say this one more time: this bigot is pouring millions of dollars a month into buying a U.S. Senate seat. Help us fight back, right here and right now

    Courage,

    Rep. Alan Grayson

The election is 6 months away, but knowing what we know now, what should we expect the economic backdrop to be when Americans choose their next president?

To answer that question, The Times asked leading forecasters from economic consultancies, financial firms and universities for their predictions on where key economic variables will stand on Nov. 8, 2016 — Election Day. The 17 who participated replied with a relatively strong consensus.

They said they believed that unemployment would be the lowest it has been during an election since George W. Bush and Al Gore faced off in 2000, when it stood at 3.9 percent. The median forecast for the unemployment rate when voters go to the polls in November 2016 was 4.8 percent (which would be down from 5.3 percent last month). They saw only a 15 percent chance of a recession starting by next Election Day. Interest rates, inflation and gasoline prices should all be a bit higher than they are now, they said, while staying quite low by historical standards.
HMMM… SOUNDS LIKE RIGHT WING REPUBLICANS HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE ABOUT THE US ECONOMY… OR ANYTHING ELSE!!!

“All in all, I’d guess it should be as close to a feel-good time as any we’ve seen in the past several years,” said Michael Feroli, chief United States economist at JPMorgan Chase.

  • JohnDille

TRUMP IS POPULAR BECAUSE HIS LIES AND BALONEY ARE EXACTLY WHAT RIGHT WINGERS HAVE LONG BELIEVED, AND WANT TO HEAR! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE RUMP GET ELECTED PRESIDENT…. AND FOR THE UNITED STATES TO QUICKLY START FALLING APART BECAUSE OF TRUMPS STUPIDITY AND INCOMPETENCE….. EXCEPT THAT… AN AWFUL LOT OF TOTALLY INNOCENT PEOPLE WOULD USFFER… AND THE UNITED STATES MIGHT NEVER RECOVER FROM A TRUMP… OR TRUMP STYLE… PRESIDENCY!!! OF COURSE, EVEN A REPUBLICAN DOMINATED CONGRESS WOULD LIKELY IMPEACH TRUMP WITHIN HIS FIRST 2 YEARS OR SO… TO KEEP HIM FROM DESTROYING THE ENTIRE REPUBLICAN PARTY, AND FROM DESTROYING THE VAST WEALTH OF THE RICH REPUBLIVCANS WHO OWN AND CONTROL AMERICA! BUT… BY THEN… THE DAMAGE WOULD BE DONE…. AND AMERICA MAY WELL NOT SURVIVE THAT NIGHTMARE INTACT! OF COURSE…PUTTING ALL OF THIS INTO RELIGIOUS TERMS JUST TO STIR UP ALL THE RIGHT WING BIBLE BANGERTS OUT THERE….. DONALD TRUMP SOUNDS JUST EXACTLY LIKE THE GUY WHO IS SUPPOSED TO BECOME THE ANTI-CHRIST WOULD BE LIKE. IF YOU READ WHAT PEOPL AY THE ANTI-CHRIST WOULD BE LIKE… AND HOW HE WOULD OPERATE… THAT GUY SOUNDS AN AWFUL LOT LIKE… DONALD TRUMP!!! HMMMM!!!

  • JohnDille

POOR POOR POOR RIGHT WING REPUBLICANS JUST CANNOT GET OVER THE FACT THAT SOME BLACK GUY IN THE WHITE HOUSE HAS LED THE UNITED STATES THROUGH ONE OF THE LONGEST… IF NOT PARTICULAR STRONG… PERIODS OF ECONOMIC GROWTH IN ALL OF US HISTORY!!! REPUBLICANS LONG FOR THE DAYS OF THE REAGAN DEPRESSION…. WHEN UNEMPLOYMENT SOARED WELL INTO THE DOUBLE DIGITS… AND FOR THE GREAT RECESSION THAT GEORGE BUSH JUNIOR GAVE US…. WHICH I SOME WAYS WAS EVEN WORSE THAN REAGANS DISASTER!!! WHY THEY LONG FOR THAT, I HAVEN’T A CLUE. RIGHT WINGERS ARE JUST A BUNCH OF RACIST MORONS, I GUESS!!!

  • Eileen

And pundits wonder why Trump is so popular. This post does not mean I endorse or anything like that. It is merely an observation. The same can be said about Bernie Sanders. It is unlikely that these two candidates would be popular if the politicians just admitted they made a mistake, something they just can’t get themselves to do.

  • rebeccadewhirst

What can we expect with Obama running or ruining I should say this nation?
