Mega Millions: Friday Is Your Next Chance to Get Filthy Rich

You didn’t win the Mega Millions lottery drawing on Tuesday? Neither did anyone else.

The jackpot has reached $548 million for the next drawing scheduled for Friday, Oct. 12. If the winner chooses the cash option, he or she would take home $309.2 before taxes.

There is still time for the Mega Millions jackpot to reach the record prize of $656 million that was shared by winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland in 2012.

The jackpot has been increasing since the last winners, 11 co-workers in a California office pool, claimed a $543 million payout on July 24. The $543 million payout is the largest payout for a single ticket winner.

Three other nine-figure jackpots have also been won so far this year.

There was a $451 million winner on Jan. 5 in Florida, a $533 million winner on March 30 in New Jersey, and a $142 million winner on May 4 in Ohio.

Mega Millions tickets cost $2 per play. Players choose five different numbers from 1 to 70 and one number from 1 to 25. They can also have a computer choose random numbers.

To win the jackpot, a player must match all six winning numbers.

Winners have the option to spread out the jackpot with 30 years of annual payments, or to take a lump sum cash payment that is equal to all of the cash in the Mega Millions prize pool.
